The City of Austin's
Cultural Asset Mapping Project
Implemented over the course of 2016-2017, CAMP: The Cultural Asset Mapping Project was a City of Austin, Economic Development Department initiated project to create a crowdsourced inventory of cultural assets across the City's newly-formed 10 Council Districts.
Serving as a project lead for CAMP, I worked closely with the consultant team to design and implement a community input campaign collect input on facilities and resources citizens identified as cultural assets. The community input component of CAMP included district mapping sessions, a take home CAMP mapping kit, and interactive online map and survey.
My work included survey design and overseeing the data collection process, identifying and mobilizing community partners to build on-the-ground project support, designing and creating survey materials, developing a custom-built online survey through Wikimapping's mapping platform, and creating the project's two final reports, The CAMP Report and Thriving in Place.

The CAMP Report
The CAMP Report serves as the final report for the 2016 CAMP survey period and provides an overview of the project's community input process and submissions. The CAMP Report describes how cultural asset mapping campaigns can be implemented in the future and how the community-created dataset can be used by policymakers and community members alike. The CAMP Report also includes a number of maps and analyses depicting the distribution of cultural facilities and their local economic impact.
My work on The CAMP Report included:
-
Writing and editing content and coordinating additional content from consultants and project partners
-
Compiling and consolidating community responses
-
Report design and layout
-
Sourcing and compiling additional economic and demographic data
-
Creating all maps and infographics
The Thriving in Place Report

The Thriving in Place Report was developed as a complement to The CAMP Report to outline policy recommendations and place-based strategies in support of cultural facilitates and cultural district planning.
While The CAMP Report explores where cultural facilities are clustering or where they are lacking, Thriving in Place explores how City of Austin policy can support their further development. Thriving in Place aims to offer an accessible introduction to cultural district planning and place-based strategies for the preservation and creation of cultural spaces in an effort to ensure all creative space makers are well-equipped with the knowledge of what is possible when planning for Austin's creative spaces.
My work on Thriving in Place included:
-
Writing and editing content and coordinating additional content from consultants and project partners
-
Report design and layout
-
Creating all maps and infographics
